Matthew 21: 23-27 JESUS' AUTHORITY WAS QUESTIONED BY CHIEF PRIESTS HE TAUGHT AT THE TEMPLE
Authority:- The chief priests and elders had a problem with it when it came to Jesus. They were probably still smarting from Jesus clearing the temple courts earlier in the chapter, so they ask him the question:-
‘By what authority are you doing these things and who gave you this authority?’
He reacts as he often did by asking them one. ‘The baptism of John, from where did it come? From heaven or man?’ I can almost see them going into a huddle as they try to answer.
‘If we say “From heaven,” he will say, ’Why then did you not believe him?’ ‘If we say “From man,” we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet.’ Lamely, they reply, ‘We don’t know.’
Jesus tells them.’ Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.’
On another occasion, they tried to arrest him -John 7:32. In verse 45 -The officers return empty-handed and the chief priests and Pharisees ask, ‘Why did you not bring him?’ The answer? Verse 46- ‘No one ever spoke like this man!’
But that leaves us with the question:-
How do we react to His authority?
